Company C Crafts “Cabaret”

VICTORIA, B.C. — This January, Company C presents the final show of their season: Cabaret. This bold and gritty piece with music by Kander and Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff will be performed at the Canadian College of Performing Arts in their very own Performance Hall (1701 Elgin Road) from January 26 to February 3. Directed by multi-award winning director Ron Jenkins, Cabaret will have you tapping your toes, wiping your eyes, and examining the world all in the span of 2 hours.

It’s hard to talk about the Broadway classics without bringing up this world-changing musical. Cabaret, the winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, is set in the seedy Kit Kat Klub of Berlin as the Nazi party rises to power in the early 30’s. It follows the story of English nightclub performer Sally Bowles, and her relationship with American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Overseeing the events of the show is the Emcee and Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. Between the rise of the Nazi party, the love affair of a German boarding house owner and a Jewish fruit vendor, a prostitute, and the dancers of the nightclub, Cabaret delivers a raw and honest depiction of Berlin that eerily parallels the world we live in today.

Ron Jenkins, the multi-award winning director, describes the show as “One of the greatest musicals of all time.” He says of Cabaret, “I first saw this show when I was twenty years old, and that performance has stuck with me all these years. I can’t wait to work with these incredibly talented students and bring this timeless and incredible musical to Victoria.”

Company C is a six-month program offered only to graduates of the two-year performing arts diploma at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, giving young performers the chance to work on three professional shows, in a professional environment, with professional directors engaged in the industry. The company has completed their first two shows; The Old Curiosity Shop directed by Sarah Rodgers, and Wintertime directed by Sara-Jeanne Hosie. Cabaret will be their final show of the season.
