Jessica Hickman is a multi-disciplinary artist, who works as an independent choreographer, director, teacher, puppeteer, and producer. While living in Victoria, Jessica has been lucky to have worked with companies such as The Belfry Theatre, Chemainus Theatre Festival, Theatre SKAM, Gotta Getta Gimmick, VOS, Theatre Inconnu, and the Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre.
In addition to her work on Vancouver Island, Jessica often travels to the Yukon where she is the Co-Artistic Director of a Yukon-based company called Open Pit Theatre. With the help of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Yukon Territorial Government, Open Pit Theatre will be premiering a new play based on over 200 interviews with Yukon residents in the fall of 2016. Over the past two years, she was invited to work with Ramshackle Theatre (based in Whitehorse) at the Banff Centre for the Arts to develop a brand new cardboard puppet show called Tombstone: A Sci-Fi Western. Jessica will be visiting Whitehorse and Vancouver in May 2016 to premier Tombstone at the rEvolver Festival and the Yukon Arts Centre. This past summer, Jessica worked in Drumheller, AB as the Crowd Director for The Canadian Badlands Passion Play.
Locally this season, you can see Jessica’s choreography in both A Christmas Carol and Puttin’ on the Ritz at The Belfry Theatre. Jessica was chosen to participate in the “New Incubator Project” where she will be developing a new play at The Belfry over the next two years. This is Jessica’s fifth consecutive year teaching at CCPA, and she is happy to be returning once again.
