Glenda Balkan-Champagne is equally at home on stage in musical theatre, opera and concert stages. In the coveted role of Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera, she toured across Canada, landing in Toronto, where she performed the role for several years. On Broadway, Glenda performed the role of Cunegonde in Bernstein’s Candide. As a frequent guest with Toronto’s Opera in Concert, Glenda appeared as Elvira in I Puritani, Mireille in Mireille, Countess Olga in Fedora (with Ben Heppner) and the Fairy Godmother in Massenet’s Cendrillon. She was the original Ann Smith in Harry Somer’s Serinette and workshopped Theatre Passe Muraille’s rock version of Rigoletto in the role of Gilda. Glenda has performed as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Montreal, Quebec, Atlantic, Hamilton, Edmonton and Victoria Symphonies. She has frequently been heard nationally in recital on CBC and Radio Canada. Glenda’s interest in the movement has led her to become a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and she is on the executive board of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada. Her skills as a yoga teacher, combined with her passion for voice teaching, led to a series of classes at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. She has given Master Classes for the Drama and Musical Theatre departments at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, and at the Junior Summer Vocal Academy at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Glenda is pleased to be back at CCPA for her ninth year.
