‘Wouldn’t you like to be able to say, just once, ‘I knew them when they were just starting out’?”
-Janis Lacouvee, on The Festival Of New Works
This Festival is a CCPA tradition-a celebration of artists starting out. At this unique event, Victoria audiences are given a rare glimpse of the first stirrings of creation. In September, a few second-year students start making a new piece for the stage. Perhaps one artist has always had a passion for leading a Sondheim choir…of non-singers! Another is imagining a hip hop dance (“I think it’s about intolerance.”) Another has a vague hunch for a comedy about misfits in love. (“I’m drawn to geeks!”) Each artist works closely with a mentor for three months. Over time, each artist’s hunch is honed, torn apart, reconsidered and rearranged. The artists experience confusion, a little terror, and, hopefully, the raw thrill of creation. No piece springs to life ready-made. The students strive to learn the skills of preparation and incubation, gaining fresh insights through trial and error. Then, each new artist gets to test the piece in front of you, a Victoria arts lover. One fine evening -with hope – the once patchy choir sings with one sweet voice. Perhaps the dancer’s story shakes you and you ask: “Am I like that?” Or maybe you see your own misfit self in love…and laugh out loud! Our audiences get a rare opportunity to see and hear these bold experiments. You are part of the artistic test. Join us for this provocative event!
