“Company C” goes on trial this month with ‘Twelve Angry Jurors’

CANADIAN COLLEGE OF PERFORMING ARTS NEWS RELEASE
October 10, 2018

Victoria, B.C. – Company C Studio Ensemble opens the first show of its 2018/19 season, ’Twelve Angry Jurors’, on October 18. This young, talented company takes you to a New York City jury room in 1957, where 12 jurors must decide on the fate of a 19-year-old boy, accused of murdering his own father. It is assumed by most that the verdict is guilty; but when one person challenges that verdict, the true character of each juror is revealed.

This riveting legal drama was adapted from the original 1957 teleplay ‘Twelve Angry Men’ by Reginald Rose. The story is loosely based on Rose’s own experience as a juror in a courtroom. “Twelve Angry Men is the only play I’ve written which has any relation at all to actual personal experience,” he comments.
When Rose himself actually sat on a jury, he reflected on the “grim, horribly persecuted attitudes” of the jurors that he met. His entire attitude changed when he realized that the fate of another man was now in his hands.
Company C’s passionate cast presents a predominantly female jury, bringing this play newfound relevance. Director James Fagan Tait was excited to tackle this particular material with the group at CCPA, and loved how the material was flexible enough to work with the gender dimensions of this company. With a very intimate and minimalistic set, audiences can expect to be on the edge of their seats; completely immersed in a naturalistic courtroom drama that plays out in real time.
