Joscelyne Tamburri tells us about her experiences as a Year II student, from the classroom to the stage.
Entering our 10th week of CCPA 2017/18, the frenzy of preparing for our first public performance is starting to reach it’s peak. This will be the first time we will perform all together as a company for our two-day Remembrance Day Tour around Victoria… so no pressure.
This year, our performance will showcase the students’ talents even more because this year as well as singing, some students will also be playing music, acting out scenes created from the real War letters sent from a great uncle of one of our students, and featuring poems written by our students as well as the classic poems of freedom.
Heather, our Creative and Artistic Director, has done an amazing job honing in on all of the creative skills we have in our school to make a really powerful, one-of-a-kind Remembrance Day performance. Another cool part of this year’s performance is that at the Legion, we will be joined by the Victoria Police Choir to sing together “A Simple Song of Freedom.” It is so amazing to hear what it sounds like to have a choir evenly balanced with men and women! That is a first for us in my year at CCPA, where the number of women quite intensely outweigh the men.
They have also added a show in my own backyard here in Sidney this year! This is super exciting for me because now I can share this beautiful performance with my friends and neighbors too, as well as our usual Oak Bay audience. It’s so wonderful to see the interest for our school expand even further throughout Victoria.
While all of this is happening, we have our regular classes and projects too! For the second years, we have our rehearsals for A Midsummer Night’s Dream going on as well in our evenings when we aren’t rehearsing for Remembrance Day. Our show opens in just over a month, so we have a lot of work ahead of us! As well as being cast in the show, each student has a production role too. I am in charge of props along with my classmate Erin, then there are wardrobe designers, choreographers, ASMs, music composers, and a ton of other roles all being filled by all our second years… under some guidance of course. As you can tell, CCPA is really making sure we have a firm grasp on how shows come together, whether it be onstage or offstage.
So between our regular class load, class projects, and the Remembrance Day show, we have a lot under our belt this week. It’s a good thing they decided to give us a mid-term reading break this year – we all definitely needed it!
That’s all for this week! Hopefully if you’re in Victoria, you’ll come to one of our shows this Saturday or Sunday, it’s going to be great! Until next time, stay classy and sassy!
