CCPA grads present scandalous funny musical with heart of gold

CANADIAN COLLEGE OF PERFORMING ARTS NEWS RELEASE
March 30, 2017

Victoria, BC – Alumni of the Canadian College of Performing Arts are tackling an extremely unorthodox hit Broadway production, never before seen in Victoria. With extremely racy themes, this Triple Crown (Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Original Book) Tony Award-Winning production takes childhood characters to a place audiences never thought they would go; including full puppet nudity.

Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, AVENUE Q is still the funniest and freshest show in New York City! This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a bright-eyed college grad named Princeton. When he arrives in the city with big dreams and a tiny bank account, he has to move into a shabby apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q. Still, the neighbors seem nice. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the slut), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the pervert), Superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and other new friends! Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

“Simply put, Avenue Q will be one heck of a great time for Victorian audiences,” says R.J. Peters, the show’s Director. “It’s such a fun showcase for the incredible talents that CCPA has to offer”. The New Yorker describes Avenue Q as “…an ingenious combination of ‘The Real World’ and Sesame Street” although AVENUE Q HAS NOT BEEN AUTHORIZED OR APPROVED BY THE JIM HENSON COMPANY OR SESAME WORKSHOP, WHICH HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS CONTENT. Due to adult language and situations, like puppet nudity, Avenue Q is not suitable for all audiences. Parental discretion is advised for children under 13.

Performances will be at the CCPA Performance Hall on June 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 8pm and 2pm on June 11. Tickets are available by calling 250-595-9970 or by going to www.ccpacanada.com. The project is a component of the Community Outreach Program of the Canadian Heritage Arts Society.
