COVID-19 Update – March 17

The administration of the Canadian College of Performing Arts met with the student body end of day yesterday to outline immediate steps being taken to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
We have chosen to be pro-active in our response to this public health emergency and have advised students that regular classes are suspended for the rest of this week, Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, March 20. By the end of the week, the administration and faculty will have crafted contingency plans for alternative instructional delivery methods to ensure our students are safe and completing their training.
We share your anxieties about what is happening in the world today. And we also know how important it is to keep our students engaged in their work. To help them stay focused, during the next four days, we are offering limited studio space at the College to individual students who book them to pursue their private practice.
Be assured that our goal is to ensure that every student successfully completes their scheduled training by the end of the school year. Our priorities, now and in the future, are the health and safety of our students and the continuation of the program.
The unprecedented actions that we are taking this week are all intended to protect the well-being, health and welfare of our students, faculty and staff.
Here is what is effective immediately:
  • No members of the public will be admitted to the College
  • Gatherings of more than 50 people at the College are prohibited
  • Students may request use of the College facilities on an individual basis
  • Student common areas, i.e. the kitchen and lounge, are not available for use
  • Social distancing protocols will be observed
  • Students will be provided with work and assignments during this hiatus
  • Counselling services will be continued on a “by-appointment” basis
  • Public performances of the TD Festival of New Works are cancelled
  • All currently booked live auditions for September intake in Victoria will be rescheduled and will be conducted in a digital format

Disney’s Newsies in late April will not be performed at the McPherson Playhouse. Patrons who purchased tickets directly through the RMTS will be contacted by the McPherson Box Office for ticket refunds. Information on an alternate delivery of this production will be provided as the situation unfolds and it becomes available. CCPA subscribers will be contacted directly by the College and we urge anyone who purchased a voucher through CCPA to email

This situation is dynamic, and we will continue to respond to recommendations from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Advanced Education. The decisions we are making now may have to be adjusted if new directives are issued.

We will communicate with students, faculty and staff regularly and will respond to any questions or concerns. We ask the patience of our subscribers, patrons and donors as we transition to a new model of operations.
