Studio Ensemble ends on high note

VICTORIA, B.C. — In keeping with tradition at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, ‘Company C’ Studio Ensemble is closing its 2019-2020 with a musical in the College’s Performance Hall, 1701 Elgin Rd.

This year’s ‘Company C’ finale, which opens Jan. 31 and runs until Feb. 8, is The Light in the Piazza, the acclaimed Broadway musical with a book by Craig Lucas, based on Elizabeth Spencer’s 1960 novel, and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel.

An ideal tonic to blow away the winter doldrums, this richly romantic Tony Award-winning musical is being directed by Roy Surette, with music direction by Heather Burns and choreography by actor, dancer, choreographer and alumni Joel Sturrock.

Set in Florence, Italy in 1953, the production explores the dynamics of relationships. It features elements of heartbreak, humour, family secrets and love through a story that chronicles the union of an innocent American girl, Clara, and a young Italian boy, Fabrizio. As the two connect their families begin to intertwine, resulting in miscommunications, hilarity and bonds that could cross an ocean.

The Light in the Piazza marks a long-awaited return to Victoria for Surette, who from 1997 to 2007 was artistic director of the Belfry Theatre, where he directed more than 25 productions, most recently The Valley in 2016.

It also brings Sturrock back to the College, where the notable CCPA and Royal Winnipeg Ballet School alumnus returned last year for the immersive cabaret Dreamer and Dissenters.

The cast of this operatic musical, a classic tale of love that is sure to have audiences humming its sweet melodies and yearning to travel back to see it again features 14 performers who engage in both onstage and off-stage roles.

The Canadian College of Performing Arts will end its 2019-2020 season with Disney’s Newsies, directed and choreographed by Jessica Hickman. It opens April 17 at the McPherson Playhouse.
