Spotlight on Alumni: Joel Sturrock

CCPA provided me with an understanding of craft that has allowed me to adapt to the ever changing mediums of performance. From cabaret to digital content creation to motion capture for major motion pictures, the skills and sense of preparedness the school instilled in me created a versatility that I utilize in every project.

Joel Sturrock is an actor, dancer and award winning choreographer and producer. An alumnus of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and the Canadian College of Performing Arts, he completed a choreography mentorship under world-renowned choreographer and director Jacques Lemay. Joel has since worked across North America and Europe as a performer, choreographer, dance consultant and movement coach.

Most notably you can see Joel’s work as movement consultant for the box office hit Star Trek: Beyond, working alongside creative consultant and acting coach Andrew McIlroy. He was also honoured with the Jessie Richardson Award for Outstanding Choreography and Movement Direction for his work on Tender Napalm. Other award winning projects and festival favourites include Bomb-itty of Errors (Arts Club), Bravofact’s The Dancing Cop (Official Selection TIFF 2012), MTV Live, and feature films Afterparty with Sociable Films and Eadweard.

Joel is no stranger to the screen appearing on such shows as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Dirk Gently, iZombie, Rogue, Supernatural, MTV LIVE, Percy Jackson and the Olympians and with motion capture roles in Night in The Museum 3, Warcraft and Monster Trucks.

He has appeared on stage across North America in such shows as Tony Award nominee Johnny Tartaglia’s Ad-Liberty, Rosie O’Donnell’s Our Family Opening onboard Norwegian Cruise Lines, Beauty & The Beast (Arts Club), MOVE: The Company and North American tours of The Nutcracker Suite.

Joel is the proud co-creator and head choreographer of the award winning series, The True Heroines and its critically acclaimed live cabaret. Named ‘What to Watch’ by USA Today, the series went on to garner a Leo Award, Best Canadian Web Series Award and a Canadian Screen Award nomination among others and was acquired by HULU Plus for distribution.

He spearheaded and is the head movement consultant for Premiere Talent Management’s Movement & Dance Division which represents some of Canada’s top dance talent including Royal Winnipeg Ballet Principal Dancer Jo-Ann Sundermeier and series leads Castle Rock and Liam Mackie.

Taking part in the education and development of the next generation of movement storytellers is of great importance to Joel. For the past 4 seasons he has been the co-choreographer of Project Limelight, a free theatre program for youth of the Vancouver downtown east side, and he recently took part in Step It Up NYC, a youth engagement program fusing the passion to move with the drive to create social change.

He is also honoured to be a guest faculty member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association, Vancouver Film School, McIlroy & Associates and the Vancouver Acting School.

Joel currently splits his time between New York City and Vancouver, Canada where he continues to produce and work in film and theatre.
